Nitinat lake is a shallow-sill
fjord on the west side of Vancouver Island,
British Columbia.
It is 23 km in length, has an average width of
1.2 km, a surface area of 28 km^2, and a
maximum depth of 205m.
The 'lake' is connected
to the Pacific Ocean by a 3 km long natural
channel with minimum depths of 2.5 m at lowest
normal tides.
With the exception of a shallow
surface layer, all of the water in Nitinat lake
is anoxic (lacking oxygen).
